Practicing positive self-talk: the mental, subconcious chatter inside our brain, uses affirming and compassionate phrasing within our thoughts. When we engage in negative self-talk, we place blame and pass judgement- very self-critical. Luckily, we can transform negative self-talk with positive affirmations. I find affirmations to be the most powerful when I say them out loud in the mirror- so yes, I talk to myself in the mirror. Here are some of the benefits I have found in this practice:
- builds confidence
- improves communication skills
- self-esteem boost
- not afraid to look people in the eyes
- removes self-doubt
All you need is a mirror. Stand in front of it, head/chin up with your shoulders back. Look directly into your eyes, take a deep breath and begin repeating your affirmations out loud. I like to repeat them as many times as it takes until I believe them wholeheartedly. Below are some examples of statements I like to affirm throughout the day, anytime I pass a mirror:
I am releasing self-doubt, bye!
I am powerful (thanks Sabrina)
I am safe and protected by my angel parents
I am loved unconditionally
I give myself permission to live a guilt-free life
I thank myself for showing up in my hardest grief moments and not giving up on myself
Here are some other guidelines for affirmations:
Tailor affirmations to your needs, repeat often (every time you pass a mirror- if you don't have one then, every time you look at your phone) and state them as a present fact ( I have instead of I will have).
